Copper ore mines are the extraction operations where copper-bearing minerals are obtained, providing the essential raw material for copper production. They are the starting point of the copper value chain, a metal critical for the energy transition, electrical infrastructure, and technology. The efficiency and scale of these mines are determining factors in the global supply of copper.
Types of Copper Mining
There are two main methods for extracting copper ore, chosen based on the geology and depth of the deposit:
- Open-Pit Mining: This is the most common method for large, low-grade deposits that are located near the surface. It involves excavating massive pits in the earth in the shape of concentric terraces. The large scale of these operations allows for the efficient extraction of immense volumes of ore and waste rock.
- Underground Mining: This method is used for higher-grade deposits that are located deep underground. It requires the construction of tunnels, shafts, and drifts to access the mineral vein. Although more costly and complex, it allows for the selective extraction of higher-value ore.
The World’s Largest Copper Mines
Global copper production is concentrated in a handful of mega-mines, primarily in South America. These are some of the largest by production capacity:
- Mines in Chile: As the world’s largest copper producer, Chile is home to several of the biggest mines. The Escondida mine is the world’s largest by volume, while others like the Collahuasi mine and El Teniente, one of the largest underground mines, are also globally significant.
- Mines in Peru: Peru is another global mining giant. The Cerro Verde mine and the Antamina mine are examples of large-scale operations that contribute significantly to the worldwide copper supply.
- Mines in Indonesia: This country is home to the Grasberg mine, which is one of the world’s largest in both open-pit and underground mining.
- Mines in Mexico and the United States: Other notable large-scale operations include the Buenavista del Cobre mine in Mexico and the Morenci mine in the United States, which is North America’s largest.
The Process from Mine to Concentrate
Once extracted from copper ore mines, the raw ore undergoes a multi-stage process before it is ready for sale to copper ore buyers:
- Extraction and Hauling: The ore is extracted using controlled blasting and then transported in massive trucks to the processing plant.
- Crushing and Grinding: The raw ore is crushed and ground into a very fine powder.
- Flotation: This powder is mixed with water and special chemicals in a process called “froth flotation.” The copper minerals attach to air bubbles and float to the surface, forming a froth that is skimmed off. The waste rock (gangue) sinks and is removed.
- Concentrate Production: The froth is dewatered to produce a product called copper concentrate, which contains between 20% and 30% copper. It is this concentrate that is sold to copper smelters and refineries.
Copper Mines in the Context of Spain
Throughout its history, Spain has had a rich tradition of copper mining. Today, production is concentrated in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, a significant geological province in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
Although Spain’s production is modest on a global scale, these mines are vital for the national and European industries. Key active mines in Spain, such as those in Huelva and Seville, extract copper ore that is either processed domestically or exported. Despite its production, Spain remains a copper ore buyer to meet the needs of its smelting and manufacturing industry, which is considerably larger than its extraction capacity.
